VALDES NAMED MEN'S GOLF ICCAC PLAYER OF THE YEAR; SANDER MAKES SECOND TEAM

AMES, Iowa – The Northeast Community College men's golf team had multiple players receive postseason awards, it was announced by the ICCAC Friday. Sophomore Santiago Valdes (Mexico City, Mexico) was named 2023 ICCAC Division II Men's Golf Player of the Year and First Team All-Region while sophomore Kody Sander (Lincoln, Neb.) was named Second Team All-Region.

Valdes won the North Central District Tournament in a three-hole playoff earlier this week and has carried a 74.3 scoring average to this point of the season. He also finished in a tie for second place at the Raider Invitational in Orange City, Iowa and finished inside the top 10 in both the Doane Spring Invite in Lincoln, Nebraska and the Iowa Central Spring Invitational in Fort Dodge, Iowa. Valdes was named Honorable Mention All-Region and Honorable Mention All-American in 2021-22 and will have a chance to continue his campaign at the 2023 NJCAA Division II Men's Golf Championship on May 23-26 at Swan Lake Resort in Plymouth, Indiana.

Sander was a key piece in the Hawks lineup in the squad that qualified for the 2022 NJCAA Division II Men's Golf Championship in Joplin, Missouri and backed up that performance during his second year with the Hawks. Sander shot a 73 and a 69 at the two-day Raider Invitational and had a 77.7 scoring average on the campaign.
