Hawks come up short in opening round loss to Grand Rapids

CHARLESTON, W.V. – Critical errors proved to be costly for the Northeast Community College volleyball team on Thursday.
 
Grand Rapids Community College ultimately capitalized on the miscues by the Hawks (21-17) to take the opening round match in three sets (25-23, 25-18 and 25-23) in the NJCAA DII Volleyball National Tournament at the Charleston Civic Center in Charleston, W.V.
 
The Hawks took a demanding 6-1 lead in the first set, but Grand Rapids made a comeback to tie the game late in the set. With the score tied at 23-23, GRCC rattled off two-straight points to down the Hawks.
 
It was a back-and-forth battle early in the second set, but Grand Rapids took a 12-9 lead after Northeast committed a couple of errors that ended up putting the Raiders in the drivers seat for the rest of the set.
 
GRCC jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the final set, forcing the Hawks to fight back, and that they did. Northeast came within a point, but the Raiders had the final say to win the set by two points.
 
Brianna Bauer (O'Neill, Neb.) recorded nine kills to lead the Hawks. MaKayla Davidson (Alliance, Neb.) added 19 assists and 19 digs, while Josie Sanger (Crofton, Neb.) had 19 digs.
 
The Hawks are scheduled to face Montgomery College (Md.) in the consolation round at 9 a.m. (CT) tomorrow in Charleston.
