NORTHEAST TOPS CENTRAL ON THE ROAD FOR FIFTH-STRAIGHT VICTORY BEHIND 18 FROM JONES
COLUMBUS, Neb. – The No. 24 Northeast Community College women’s basketball team made the short trip Wednesday night to Columbus, Nebraska for a contest with Central Community College. The Hawks downed the Raiders by a final score of 76-64 to win their fifth-straight showdown just two days after being ranked in the national poll for the first time this season.
COLUMBUS, Neb. – The No. 24 Northeast Community College women's basketball team made the short trip Wednesday night to Columbus, Nebraska for a contest with Central Community College. The Hawks downed the Raiders by a final score of 76-64 to win their fifth-straight showdown just two days after being ranked in the national poll for the first time this season.
Northeast (12-4, 7-3 ICCAC) and the Raiders were competing as conference foes for the first time in Region 11 during the matchup as Central is a new member of the league this year. The Hawks jumped out to a 20-11 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back as Aaliyah Jones (Rapid City, S.D.) led Northeast in scoring with 18 points and was joined in double figures by Ayana Owens (Lincoln, Neb.) with 12 points and Aweng Akoi (Sioux Falls, S.D.) with 11 points. Akoi added 12 rebounds for a double-double.
The Hawks will head back on the road this weekend as they will take on No. 14 North Iowa Area Community College, a team currently one spot ahead of Northeast in the ICCAC standings, at 1 p.m. Saturday in Mason City, Iowa.

Head Women's Basketball Coach Matt Svehla on the victory and the huge matchup looming on Saturday:
"Always good to get a win on the road, but we were flat and we just did not play very clean tonight on either end of the floor," Svehla said. "We have a tough game against a nationally-ranked team on Saturday, so we will need to bring a much better effort."
