SUCCESSFUL SEASON ENDS FOR NORTHEAST MONDAY AGAINST NO. 1 KIRKWOOD

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Northeast Community College women's basketball team traveled to Cedar Rapids, Iowa Monday to compete in the Region 11-A Tournament Championship against No. 1 Kirkwood Community College. The Hawks fell in the showdown by a final score of 69-36.

Northeast (21-1, 12-6 ICCAC) knew the challenge they were facing against the defending national champions and No. 1 Eagles, but the Hawks entered the night looking to continue their best season since 2019-20 with 21 wins to show for it. Aaliyah Jones (Rapid City, S.D.) tallied 21 points and three steals while Mia Wiederin (Norfolk, Neb.) had seven points of her own. Jones and Wiederin finished the year leading the ICCAC in scoring as Jones finished with 21.4 points per game while Wiederin finished the season with 17.4 points per game.

Head Women's Basketball Coach Matt Svehla on the night against No. 1 Kirkwood:

"Obviously, this one did not play out how we would've liked," Svehla said. "We just did not play particularly well in the first half, and I thought Kirkwood was really sharp. They're an excellent basketball team and you need to bring your best when you play them."

Svehla on what he will remember about his year this year:

"Really proud of what this team got accomplished with 21 wins," Svehla said. "They're a good group of people and a joy to coach."
