SLOW START HAMPERS HAWKS AGAINST TOP-RANKED EAGLES

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Northeast Community College women's basketball team returned to the floor Saturday for a matchup with No. 1 Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The Eagles came out on top in the showdown by a final score of 83-51.

Northeast (6-8, 3-3 ICCAC) fell behind 20-9 at the end of the first quarter but put together a solid stretch in the second quarter to keep the deficit manageable. Allison Richards (Pine Ridge, S.D.) led the Hawks in scoring with 17 points while Tori Osten (Columbus, Neb.) contributed eight points of her own off the bench for Northeast. The Hawks remain squarely in the middle of the ICCAC standings through six games of conference play and will have three of their next four contests on their home court.

Head Women's Basketball Coach Matt Svehla on the afternoon:

"We dug ourselves an early hole but played better in the second quarter to stay in it," Svehla said. "We did not play well enough in the second half to cut into the lead."

Svehla on his team putting this one behind them:

"This is our first game back after break, so hopefully our play will be better as we move forward," Svehla said.

The Hawks will host Iowa Central Community College at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Cox Activities Center in Norfolk.
