Moore helps Northeast get back on track

NORFOLK, Neb. – The Northeast Community College women's basketball team got back to its winning ways on Monday night, topping Hastings College JV 87-58 at the Cox Activities Center in Norfolk.

Despite a sluggish start in the first half, Kyla Moore (Norfolk, Neb.) guided the Hawks by sinking a 3-pointer late in the first quarter to pull Northeast within two points. The Hawks eventually took a one-point lead in the second quarter after sophomore Kori Fischer (South Sioux City, Neb.) found the bottom of the net on a long-range 3-pointer.

Throughout much of the second half, the Northeast bench stepped up to keep the Hawks firing on all cylinders. Teagan Pompa (Elgin, Ill.) drained a 3-pointer, while Caitlin Orton (Mills, Neb.) followed suit with a layup to pull Northeast within a bucket.

With 5:46 to play in the half, Pompa hit another 3-pointer off a no-look pass from Lauren Hunstad (Parker, S.D.). Minutes later, Orton found the glass to put the Hawks up by two points, but it was the Broncos that took a one-point lead heading into the locker room.

The second half proved to be a different story for the Hawks. Newcomer Emina Hadzihusejnovic (Mostar, Bosnia) made three-straight layups that led to back-to-back 3-pointers from Irene Sanz (Vilassar de Mar, Spain) and Hunstad.

Later in the quarter, Moore was the main source of the Hawks' offense as she tallied 10 straight points that put Northeast in the driver's seat. The Hawks closed out the fourth quarter by holding the opposition to seven points for the win.

Freshman Kyla Moore (Norfolk, Neb.) had one of her best games in a Hawks uniform so far this season, recording 20 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the field and four 3-pointers. She added six steals and two rebounds in 19 minutes of action.

Hadzihusejnovic had 15 points and eight rebounds, while Sanz collected 14 points. Pompa and Orton had 10 points each off the bench.

The Hawks (11-8) shot 45 percent from the field and 43 percent from beyond the arc.

Northeast heads south to battle Highway 81-rival Central Community College at 5:30 p.m. tomorrow night in Columbus, Neb.
