HAWKS STRUGGLE TO FIND OFFENSE SUNDAY AGAINST KIRKWOOD

NORFOLK, Neb. – The Northeast Community College softball team again hosted Kirkwood Community College for a doubleheader Sunday at Ta-Ha-Zouka Park in Norfolk. Offense was at a premium for the Hawks as they fell in Game 1 by a final score of 4-1 before dropping Game 2 by a final of 10-1.

The Hawks (13-13, 0-4 ICCAC) struggled to find much success at the plate and were only able to squeeze out a handful of hits on the day. Emilee Spitz (Columbus, Neb.) took the ball in Game 1 and was able to continue her successful week on the mound with another magnificent performance. Runs were hard to come by in both games as the Hawks were only able to find their way on to the scoreboard on two different occasions throughout the day.

HERE FROM THE HAWKS COACH

Head softball coach Iris Woodhead's overall thoughts on today's games:

"Our mentality changed for the best today," Woodhead said. "Today we just came in and played the game of softball, which was good. We saw that in the first game and then in the second game it just got away from us in that last inning. We have to have a better approach at the plate."

Woodhead's thoughts on how pitcher Emilee Spitz has developed as of late:

"Her progression has been awesome," Woodhead said. "It's exactly what we've been waiting on seeing. I'm glad that she had a successful day yesterday and a successful day today. She pitched lights out."

Woodhead's thoughts on where her team stands after the first conference series of the season:

"They scored runs off walks," Woodhead said. "That's it. They didn't get base hit after base hit after base hit. They would get a walk, another walk and then a hit. If we're able to limit walks and pitch the way that we did we're going to be in business in conference play. I like our progression. I'm not happy going 0-4 (on the weekend), but I'm happy with our mentality today. Going into more conference games with this mentality will help things look completely different for us."

UP NEXT

The Hawks will get back after it Tuesday at home against Southeast Community College. The games are scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. Tuesday at Ta-Ha-Zouka Park in Norfolk.
